Teethless Goober Anse Bundren

Image
William Faulkner's 'As I Lay Dying,' tells the story of the Bundren family and their journey to bury their deceased mother, Addie. The novel is uniquely written due to the multiple narrators in the book, which switch back and forth in each chapter. This was my first time reading anything like this and it was very interesting seeing the workings in the minds of not only the Bundrens but the people around them as well. Because Faulkner is also using the "stream of consciousness" writing style, each character was very individualized and unique. During class, someone brought up that As I Lay Dying was almost like a parody, making fun of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, as there isn't really a hero, it doesn't really follow the steps, and when the book does, it almost seems to do the exact opposite to the steps. In this blog, I would like to analyze Anse Bundren and see how he both fits and contrasts with the Hero's Journey.     Anse Bundren, t...

Cars (2006): a perfect rendition of the hero's journey

Image
Recently I watched Cars again and let me tell you it was just as good as I remembered. Probably the first Disney/Pixar film I’ve ever watched, Cars 2006 tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a racing superstar, being stranded in the small town of Radiator Springs, and going on a journey to discover himself and find what is really important. In this blog post, I would like to explore how the Cars movie“drives through” the various steps of Joseph Campbell’s Hero's Journey. So “Buckle up” and join me as we drive into the world of Lightning McQueen.      The journey begins with Lightning McQueen, a rookie but already a superstar, tying for first place with two other cars in the prestigious Piston Cup. Needing a singular winner, a tie-breaker is planned to be held across the country in California. A really interesting thing I realized while watching the film was, the known and unknown world parts of the Hero’s Journey in this movie are quite debatable. One...

Heroine's Journey of Megamind

Image
Megamind, one of the most underrated and unappreciated animated movies in the 2000s. With How to Train Your Dragon coming before, and The Croods after, one could argue this period was the peak of DreamWorks Animation, but that is beside the point. In today's blog I would like to connect the plot of Megamind and specifically the character Megamind's journey to the Maureen Murdock's Heroine's Journey. While it is quite a strange comparison, I really do think Megamind's story correlates to the Heroine's Journey incredibly well.  We begin at the separation from the feminine, and to be honest, this will probably be the weakest comparison of blog. If we change feminine into Megamind's sense of good, to please and protect others, and masculine as his evil and rebel side, this step begins to make sense. When Megamind was young and in elementary school (called "Lil' Gifted School For lil' gifted kids, which was built right next to a prison where the youn...

Messi's Journey

Image
Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, also known as monomyth, is a path that many fictional stories follow. The journey describes 17 steps that heroes throughout fiction of all location and times go through, some examples of characters and stories that closely follow this journey would include Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, Simba from the Lion King, and Hercules from Roman mythology. Though the journey is a template of fictional stories, due to real life not being as perfect, I do think the journey of Lionel Messi, my favorite soccer player, follows this journey weirdly well. Specifically, his journey of him and his national team of Argentina.                Just for a quick context of who he is, Lionel Andres Messi was born on June 24th, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina to parents of Italian ancestry. From an incredibly early age, Messi showed a talent in soccer, he was signed by FC ...
